CHAPTER THIRTY THREE
âJohn. John, wake up. Weâre only an hour from the border now,â Dimitri informed him.
âIâm not asleep, Dimitri, Iâm just resting,â John replied in a gruff voice, as he pushed the cap up his forehead to reveal his face. âIâve been thinking about what you said, you know, about me holding back on you.â
Dimitri glanced over and gave John an approving nod, raising an eyebrow as if to say âand?â.
John continued. âI know that we need to be in this together fully if we are going to succeed, and I know you are risking everything, coming out here with me. I guess itâs just⦠well, old habits die hard, my friend.â
âI get it, John, old habitsâ¦â
John sat up sharply in his seat, pulling the recline lever back to its upright position. âNo, seriously, I mean it. Over the last few hours Iâve been going through everything in my head because I want us to be on the same page. I donât want to keep secrets from you, Dimitri.â
âSo, what have you come up with?â
âMost of it you already know, but⦠there is one thing you might not. I think I might know why he got out of prison in the first place⦠I think I know why he was released.â
âGo onâ¦â
âWell, itâs like you said. It must have been something big to convince my government to trade him. Many years of hard intelligence went in to capturing him, so in my mind, I can think of only one secret that could possibly be damaging enough for them to even consider his release, at least, from my time at MI6 anyway.â
âSounds interesting. What is it, John?â
âDo you remember, towards the end of your time in Iraq, when you came to me with a query about a mystery facility out in the Syrian dessert?â
âVaguely,â Dimitri answered, as he racked his brain. âDidnât you tell me it was all nonsense?â
âYes, I did; at the time, I believed it to be so. I was in charge of monitoring all facilities in that area, so since I knew nothing about it, I reasoned that it must just be a rumour. But following our conversation, it nagged away at me, and I eventually decided to check it out. In my meeting with the chief a few days later, I dropped an additional operation into the agenda that wasnât in my remit, just to test the water, so to speak. I wanted to see if he might divulge any operations he was aware of that didnât involve me, you know, in the confusion. To be honest, I was concerned that I might be being kept out of the loop in my own country, and wanted to find out what was going on, if anything.â
âYes, I can imagine. It could have been very dangerous for you, not knowing,â Dimitri chipped in, eager to keep John talking.
âExactly! Well, anyway, he did. When I mentioned a phantom op in Rawa, he paused, and asked me if I meant Haditha.
